Montessori - A Career For You

Montessori education is growing in Australia, particularly in the early childhood sector. Parent demand for quality and choice is becoming more discerning, resulting in an increased number and capacity of Montessori schools and centres. As a result, there is a high demand for trained Montessori educators.

There are two roles for the adult in a Montessori classroom, a Montessori Assistant and a Montessori teacher (called Director/Directress).

Montessori Assistants should have Montessori Assistant Certificate and the Certificate III in Children's Services qualifications.

A Montessori teacher should have a Montessori Diploma at the age range of the child that they would like to teach (0-3, 3-6 or 6-12). There are also other government mandated qualifications depending on the setting and age range of the child. For example, 50% of child care centre educators will require a minimum of a Diploma of Children's Services qualification. A university level teaching degree (such as a Bachelor of Education) may be required for other teachers.  Our AMI Montessori Diploma Early Childhood 3-6 course is an approved diploma level education and care qualification by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).  Teachers of school aged children (6-12 primary) will also be required to hold a teaching degree in addition to the Montessori qualification.

Early Childhood (0-6): Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA)

Primary (6-12): The relevant state teachers institution
